FOUR YEAR OLD FILLY-KINGMAMBO x SEATTLE SLEW x NIJINSKY II Owner: ALEX
Record: 1999 - 23/ 9-2-3
Earnings: $3,459,733
The large and graceful grey filly with black blaze started the year on the grass, switched to the dirt for nine races and then returned to the lawn with a flourish. SEATTLE HIT ended her season with victories in three graded stakes, including the prestigious Japan Cup at Ascot. What made her season remarkable was the company she kept, defeating the boys six times in 1999 and racing with the toughest turf horses in the world. After closing out 1998 with a good second in a graded stake, trainer, Alex, took his filly o Florida for the Grade III, Buck Dharma Handicap, where she raced poorly with no explanation. Alex then switched the filly to the main track where she raced competitively in minor stakes but would be badly beaten by the classier stakes runners. For the Missouri 299 Stake, her trainer entered her on the turf against the boys and she proceeded to run away and hide with a smashing four length victory. Sensing his filly wanted to run all day, Alex chose the Estrogen Stake for fillies and mares at twelve furlongs where she raced well but finished a tired second. Alex than made a quick trip to Pennsylvania and scored in the eleven furlong Frank’s Own Derby. At this point she may have been one confused filly, with all the travel and different racing surfaces and finished a well beaten fourth in the Grade II, Sunrise Cap in California. Her connections then had her race on the dirt, which she did with great success including a Grade I win in the Undefeated Filly Stakes. Here is where fate intervened and a quirk of the racing gods happened in Longchamp. Alex entered the filly in the Japan All Comers where she never showed her closing kick. Another poor showing on the dirt in the Jockey Guild Gold Cup left her handlers in chagrin. This is where fate and the racing gods came into play. It had become evident by this time that the Japan All Comers had been a key race, when the horses that ran in it came back to run several very big stake races around the world. The filly was alert and lively around the barn and was training beautifully in the mornings. Alex and his filly made a trip to Woodpine and proceeded to come from eleven lengths off the pace to a demonstrative four length victory. At this point Alex had a big decision to make. The Breeders Bowl was approaching and he had to decide where to enter his filly, the Turf Classic or the Distaff Turf. Intuitively knowing his filly really wanted the extra distance in the Turf Classic, he rolled the dice and went for all the marbles. In the race she loomed into contention but then faded in the stretch to finish fifth. We will never know what would have happened, had she been entered in the Distaff. Alex then wheeled her right back in the Grade II, Island Handicap in New York, where she proceeded to toy with a strong field of fillies and mares by unleashing a lightening bolt stretch run to win going away by five lengths. This trainer and filly were earning some serious frequent flyer miles with her ambitious fall campaign and off they went to Ascot for one of the richest races of the year, the Grade I, Japan Cup. She entered the gate as a girl among men but with a magnificent stretch duel with champion ENOUGH KNOCK, she had gained the pinnacle of her career with the thrilling victory over the turf male champion by a diminishing length. The race was a sight to behold as SEATTLE HIT pranced to the winners circle to a thunderous roar by the normally reserved Ascot gallery. She finished the year with an evenly run race in the Grade II, Miami Beach Turf Stake, where she finished third.
We have chosen a Distaff Turf Champion in SEATTLE HIT, but she strangely never raced with the best fillies of her division. Instead she won over three million dollars racing against the best turfers in the world, male or female on the grand racing stages of the USA, Canada, Britain and France. Trainer, Alex, is resting his star and planning a season for his filly that will likely include the same heart, courage and determination of a true champion. Seattle Hit's Past Performances
