THREE YEAR OLD FILLY-SEATTLE SLEW x LYPHARD x WINGED T. Owner: THEBOSS Record: 21-9-5-2 Earnings: $1,070,545
By Jeff Carlson Unraced as a two year old, PHARSEA SEATTLE made up for lost time as a three year old racing twenty one times in forty three weeks. Oh, but how she made up for it was thrilling. She won on the dirt and the turf; she won sprinting and at a distance and at the end of the season had won over a million dollars. She won her first time out of the box, sprinting on the turf. She quickly went through her allowance conditions and showed in two minor stakes. Her trainer, Theboss, saw her great potential and shipped her to California to race with the best of her generation. The broad chested, dark brown filly quickly became a fan favorite and was usually the betting public’s odds on choice and she didn’t disappoint her fans by winning two stakes and a second in one. She came to New York as an underdog for the Grade I, Exam Stakes but left some heads spinning with her patented late rush to the wire, winning by three lengths. She had arrived at the top of the division and a campaign was planned by her connections, aiming at that most prestigious of fall distaff races, the Bell Dame in New York. Theboss took his filly to Indiana and immediately scored in the Spanked Stakes, but then threw an unexpectedly poor race in the Flirt Stakes, where she raced with disinterest and was beaten by ten lengths. Sensing something in his filly, Theboss quickly wheeled her back to New York and entered the Grade I, Fast Feline where she was boxed for most of the race but when she finally got loose was closing with a rush but ran out of room. She may have been the best that day, but poor racing luck got her in trouble but she almost overcame it. Starting to feel snakebit, her trainer looked for an easier spot to get her ready for the objective. Going back to Indiana, she was entered in the IN BB Oaks and again was in trouble the entire race but still managed a driving second, beaten only a length. The day of the Grade I, Bell Dame was a beautiful autumn afternoon at the Big Oval in New York. This would be her first test against older fillies and mares and her trainer was concerned that she would again have poor racing luck. PHARSEA SEATTLE was relaxed and rated well off the pace but when her jockey chirped, she found another gear and the holes opened in front of her as she closed like a locomotive and won going away by three lengths. It was one of those wonderful moments in sport, when the audience realizes they have witnessed the coming of age of a champion. She was still kicking on the barn doors, looking for the rush of the race and was quickly entered in the FL BB Distaff, where she won handily. Another troubled second in the Western Jove in Texas and a poor showing in the Grade II, KY Distaff Cap seemed to point to a tired filly that had waged a brilliant but long and exhausting season. She continued off form for two more races and seemed to be crying out for a trip to the farm to rest. But her competitive nature bounced back quickly and she was sent back to New York for the ten furlong Girls Cap. She responded with her fastest race yet, registering a speed rating of #112 and winning by a widening three lengths.
Theboss is now giving his champion a much-needed vacation as she rests and regains her energy and strength for her handicap season. PHARSEA SEATTLE had won at distances from six and a half-furlong to ten furlongs; she won on the dirt and on the turf. She raced and won against the best of her generation and with her stunning victory in the Bell Dame, was for a moment, the best filly in the world.
